There are three types of pool heating systems, or a combination of them, to choose from. However, the further north you go affects overall ambient temperatures, the amount of sunlight you receive, and pool use throughout the year. 

Gas Swimming Pool Heaters - provide consistent and quick temperature control when cooler elements cause the pool's water temperature to fluctuate. However, they are less expensive than other options and installed in pools with infrequent use or cooler weather.

Heat Pump Pool Heaters (HPPH) - work well alone or in combination with solar panels to increase the pool's water temperature. They take longer to heat and run more should the solar panels not provide enough heat to maintain a comfortable temperature. They are suitable for warmer climates as they are less energy efficient at converting colder air. 

Solar Pool Heaters - the most energy-efficient pool heating option suited for climates with better sun exposure. Solar panels help maintain ambient temperatures without running other heating systems. Yet when used in combination with Gas or HPPH pool heaters, they offer cost savings and energy efficiency.
